UPDATE: You can mute Edge tabs with a click now. No need to follow the tedious steps given below.
If you have used Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browser before, you probably know that theses browsers display a speaker icon on tabs that are playing audio or video. And these browsers also allow you to mute tabs by clicking on the speaker volume.
Microsoft Edge also displays a speaker icon on tabs that are playing audio/video. Unfortunately, Microsoft Edge doesn’t offer an option to mute specific tabs or all open tabs.
Currently, there is no extension out there to help you quickly mute a tab in Edge browser. However, Windows 10 now allows you mute tabs in Edge browser using the Volume Mixer.
With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (v1709), Microsoft has updated the Volume Mixer to support modern apps like Edge and Groove Music. Before this, we had to relay on third-party apps like EarTrumpet to adjust volume levels for individual apps.
Volume Mixer has been updated keeping Edge browser in mind. The best part is that if multiple Edge browser tabs are making sound, the Volume Mixer lists all tabs (with their names) that are playing the sound so that you can easily mute tabs that you want to mute. For those who don’t know, Volume Mixer is a built-in feature designed to allow you control the volume level of each of your apps and programs.
Remember that Edge browser is now available for iOS and Android as well but there is no way to mute tabs in the smartphone version.

NOTE: You must be running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (v1709). To check, type Winver.exe in Start/taskbar search and then press Enter. If you are running Fall Creators Update, you will see version 1709.
Step 1: Open Volume Mixer. To open it, right-click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click Open Volume Mixer option. You can also use the Start/taskbar search to open Volume Mixer.
NOTE: If the volume icon is missing, please refer to our fix to volume icon missing in Windows 10 taskbar guide to restore the same.
Step 2: In the Volume Mixer dialog, in the Applications section, it displays all tabs of Edge browser that are playing music or video. As you can see in the picture, the Volume Mixer displays the tab name for easy identification.
Step 3: Click on volume icon just below a tab to mute the specific tab. If you have multiple Edge tabs playing audio or video, you will have to click on the volume icon below each of the Edge icon to mute all of them.
