Multiple solutions exist for sharing files between Windows and Mac, and between Windows and other devices. People often use email, USB flash drives, instant messaging services like WhatsApp, and third-party tools to share files between Windows and Mac.
But did you know there is an easy, safe way to quickly share files between a Windows 11/10 PC and a Mac using the Microsoft Edge browser? A built-in feature in the Microsoft Edge browser called Edge Drop helps you quickly share files across your devices.
The Edge Drop feature is basically a feature designed to share files across your devices using your OneDrive account. So, yes, you need to sign in to the Edge browser on both your Windows 11 PC and your Mac to use the feature. But once you sign in, sharing files between your Windows 11/10 PC and Mac is effortless.
In fact, in addition to files, you can also share notes and links quickly between your computers. Needless to say, you can share all types of files, including PDFs, documents, and photos.
Use the Edge browser to share files between Windows and Mac
Here is how to use the Edge Drop feature to share files, links, and notes between a Windows 11 PC and a Mac.
Step 1: Ensure that both the Windows 11 PC and the Mac have Edge. On Windows 11, Edge is installed by default. On a Mac, you can get it from this Microsoft page.
Step 2: Once installed, on both Windows and Mac, you need to sign in to your Microsoft account. To do that, launch the Edge browser, click the user icon in the toolbar, and then click Sign in to sync data. Enter the credentials to sign in.
Repeat this on both your Mac and Windows PC.
Step 3: To share a file between your Windows PC, Mac, and other devices where you have signed in to your Microsoft account in the Edge browser, click the Copilot icon in the toolbar, then click the Drop (paper rocket) icon (see the picture below).
This will open the Edge Drop panel.
Step 4: Finally, click the plus icon, select the file that you would like to share, and then click the Open button. That’s it! The file will be uploaded to your OneDrive account.
Step 5: To see a shared file on your recipient computer, click the Copilot icon in the Edge toolbar and then click the Drop icon. The Drop panel should display all shared files here.
You may right-click a file to save or see in the file in the folder.
To drop a note, you may simply type in the chat box.
