Startup Sound Changer: Change Windows 7 Startup Sound

Last Updated on April 12, 2020 by admin 12 Comments

If you have ever tried to replace the default Windows 7 startup sound with a custom tone, you probably know how difficult it is to change the startup sound as one needs to edit the imageres.dll system file to make it happen.

Startup Sound Changer is a fantastic tool from the makers of Windows Media Player Background Changer, Aero Tuner, and Personalization Panel. The tool easily lets you replace the default startup sound with a mouse click.

Please note that you can replace the default startup sound with a .wav file only. So, don’t forget to convert your MP3 file to .WAV format before using this tool. The tool lets you restore to the default startup sound as well.

Change Windows 7 startup sound with Startup Sound Changer

Step 1: Download the Startup Sound Changer zip file (link provided at the end of the page) and extract it to get the setup file.

Step 2: Run the setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step 3: Launch Startup Sound Changer with admin rights. Use the Replace button to browse to the custom sound file. Please note that the new sound file must be in .wav format only.

Step 4: You are done! You can always use the Restore button to revert to the default sound file.

The program supports both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7 and Vista.

confirmed working with windows 10 yay. now i have sovereign’s “you exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it”.

Though I wanted it as my shut down sound but can’t seem to get it working. any chance of remaking a ‘windows exit sound changer’??

Several years have gone buy since I last tried to change the startup sound in Windows 7 so I decided to try again and got back to this site for ‘Startup Sound Changer’ which has since been updated with clearer instructions on how to use this tool and it worked Great ! Thank You Soooo Much ! ! Changed my startup sound on two different Win 7 drives with NO hitches ! Simple and easy. I wanted to use the XP startup sound on my music desktop that all my music was transferred to after it was edited in WMP 11 as a reminder of what once was and all the hard work I put into it in XP. Love It ! Alas, I can now change the startup sound on any Windows 7 drive to my liking Without any hassles ! I used the older version but will now be trying out the newer version as well. I believe the newest version remedies problems using this tool in Windows 8 and 8.1 and maybe 10 as well. Great little tool. I highly recommend it from my own personal experience. Thank you !

Works great! I recommended it in my newsletter. Now they want an app like that for the shut-down sound.
    What have you got?
    Thanks!

Indeed. NEVER EVER USE THIS WITH WINDOWS 8 !!!!

It took me a day before I got my system working properly again.
The fix is: if you don’t have another Windows 8 system at hand, install the same Windows 8 version on another system. Then copy de file c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll from that system. You’re not allowed to overwrite the current version. Rename it first, then copy the file and reboot your system.

If you are using Windows 8….DO NOT USE THIS. It causes your Start Menu/screen to not show properly and break explorer (FOREVER!). Likely due to the new OS, no fix found.
