On a Windows PC, with default installation settings, all web browsers save downloaded files to the Downloads folder so that users can view and access downloaded files in one place.
The Downloads folder can be accessed from the Start menu, File Explorer, the Edge browser, and several other places.
While this default download location is perfect for most users, users who often download large files might end up using a significant amount of space on the Windows installation drive, since the Downloads folder is on the drive where Windows is installed. For instance, if Windows 11 is installed on drive “C”, the Downloads folder uses space on the “C” drive.
So, if you often need to download large files in the Edge browser, you might want to change the default download location to a folder on a drive other than the Windows installation drive to avoid running out of free space on the Windows drive.
NOTE: Previously downloaded files will continue to appear in the default Downloads folder. Only files that you download in the future will be saved in the new location.
If you wish, you may move all the files from the default Downloads folder to the new location for ease of access. If the Downloads folder is consuming a significant amount of space, you can consider moving the Downloads folder to another drive.
Change the download location in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11/10 and Mac
Step 1: Launch the Edge browser.
Step 2: Click the three dots in the Edge toolbar and then click Settings to open the Settings page (refer to the picture below).
Step 3: On the left pane of the Settings page, click Downloads.
Step 4: Here, in the Downloads section, click the Change button, select the folder where you would like to save files downloaded with the Edge browser, and then click the Select Folder option. That’s it!
From now on, Edge will save the downloaded files to a new location.
NOTE: The same page also offers an option called “Ask where to save each file before downloading” to force Edge to ask for a location to save each time you try to download a file.
