Microsoft has been testing a new email client for the Windows operating system. The new app, Outlook or Outlook for Windows, will likely replace the current Mail app in Windows 10 and 11 in the coming days.
The new Outlook app for Windows 10 and 11 offers the familiar Outlook.com webmail interface. With the app, you get all the features and options available on the Outlook website.
Remember that the new Outlook for Windows app is entirely different from the paid Outlook desktop client, which requires Microsoft 365 subscription.
At present, many Windows 10/11 users are getting an option to try the new Outlook app. Eligible PCs show a Try the New Outlook toggle button at the top-right corner of the Mail app. Clicking it will bring up the new Outlook app.
When you enable the new Outlook app, the classic Mail app is automatically disabled.
After using the new Outlook app for a while, if you want to go back to the old Mail app, you need to click on the toggle button next to the New Outlook located top-right of the app to switch back to the Mail app.
Can we use both Mail and the new Outlook app together?
No, as of now, there is no option to use Mail and the new Outlook app together. That is, when you enable the new Outlook app, the Mail app is automatically disabled.
Alexander Hartley says
I hate this outlook e-mail. I didn’t ask for it, I’m not sure how I got it, I do not want it, it is rubbish!
George says
The new outlook is a pain to use, time consuming and not user friendly. I wish to delete it and use the old mail format. it was a better program. Microsoft needs to stop trying to fix something that was not broken!!!!!!
Dick says
I use Outlook from the Office (Microsoft 365) subscription. Not interested in a replacement for desktop microsoft mail. How do I stop the “New Outlook” advertising blitz?
James Lyons says
The new outlook is rubbish, time consuming unhelpful and useless.
Steven says
It’s absolutely an abysmal “app.” I’m grateful that the old app was still available in the Microsoft store. I’m hoping that there’s some way to permanently disable the new one. Maybe through some registry edits? Not sure, but definitely not a fan of the new one. Even on my brand new laptop, it’s sluggish, not as responsive, and bloated all to heck. Let us keep the old one Microsoft!!
George Thomas Duram says
I paid for a stand alone version of Office 2021 Pro+ including Outlook. I do not want to use the “new Outlook”.
If as MS is now disabling the edition that I paid for, can I get my money back?
Any one interested in a class action.?
Alex Probst says
I agree with the comments above. The “new” mail app (outlook) is absolutely terrible. I already have outlook 365 and I hate that too. Many of my accounts won’t work in any MS Outlook but they do work in the old Mail app. Let users decide what they want to use and don’t force this garbage on us. I am a Microsoft Certified Professional and I can’t stand Outlook and stopped using it two decades ago. I have periodically looked into it and if anything, it is worse than before.
Finnulf says
The fact that “New Outlook” is complete trash is one thing, but the fact that Microsoft keep attempting to ram it down our throats is another. Windows Mail works, stop messing with it. Sunsetting Windows Mail is an aggressive act, forcing users away from a perfectly functional piece of software.
Microsoft’s need to include ads and gateways to subscription service for a piece of software are signs of how desperate they have become to milk every last penny out of the end users.
Da Bebb says
I wish to carry on using Mail App in Windows 10 – every time I try to open it I get Outlook instead (with bloody adverts.) When I try to remove adverts I am told I will have to pay.
Bloody outrageous – I have now gone back to using the Mail App after following the steps putlined above. However it appears that this won’t be an option come December 2024.
And this on top of being told that I need to replace my PC if I want to upgrade to windows 11!!
Anyone for Linux?!
Allan Changwa says
Unfortunately, Windows 11 does not include the classic Outlook desktop app that was available in previous versions of Windows. The new Outlook app in Windows 11 is designed to integrate with Microsoft 365 services and provides a modern experience.
However, if you specifically need the classic Outlook desktop application, you might consider using Microsoft Outlook 2019 or an earlier version. These versions are available as standalone applications and can be installed on your Windows 11 system. Keep in mind that these older versions may not receive feature updates or security patches like the newer versions.
Nan says
Microsoft – I’m trying to run a business here. Isn’t that enough aggrevation much less our email consistantly going to the Draft and not sending the email. I want my old Outlook back. Microsoft you have really let us all down. Get it together man!!! HATE THE NEW OUTLOOK!!!!
Bill says
I do not want Outlook. I do not need Outlook. Nobody asked for my opinion, I used the calendar all the time and it’s important to me. I want it left untouched. What is going on at MS trying to force things on users they don’t want, have no need for and quite often don’t work properly?
Myron says
since I had an automatic update I can no longer get or receive mail via windows mail.
Paul Cooper says
The new Outlook is rubbish. I don’t want it. Microsoft don’t care about their customers, they just impose new versions whether their customers want it or not. We are told try it, then it is imposed on us. Lousy customer service.
JoJo says
Microsoft, I will not use outlook for even a second due to the bugs and ads you disguise as mail. What an awful user experience you are trying to trick people to click on your ads. What is wrong with you people?
Really F*CK you for getting rid of a perfectly fine working Mail app and replace it with a bug ridden, ad ridden piece of junk.
Sincerely EVERYONE.
robin says
We will now be forced to switch to the new outlook mail app in the new year.
The new Outlook mail app is NOT READY. What a fiasco. MS never gets tired of making their customers suffer.
Sandra A Miller says
I agree with the many, many others, why do we have to switch to something we don’t want!? As of now I have Outlook
receiving some mail and “old” mail which is stuck, not receiving new mail. Says I must update password for email; did that and nothing happened! -OR- give permission to sync, not sure how to do that!? It really sucks, why do they do this to us? My “old” mail worked wonderful, I had no complaints!
Graham says
Can I uninstall New Outlook and still use the old mail method? The new Mail keeps on crashing my computer, it is confusing to use, hangs up and I don’t want it.
Kind regards,
Graham
Carol says
I got partway through “trying” the new Outlook and stopped midstream because Microsoft wanted me to create a new account so it could sync my mail in a cloud. I closed the install windows and uninstalled the Outlook (new) app (following directions at https://www.intowindows.com/how-to-uninstall-the-new-outlook-app-from-windows-10-11/). Thank goodness, my original Outlook reopened with no damage done.
Nate says
Yeah, where is the “file” tab?
This is trash.
Sharon says
who designed the new outlook?? looks good but doesn’t work which makes it a dud! bring back what works , Even my virus protection doesn’t trust it so I don’t either!
Margaret Aten says
I DO NOT WANT THE OUTLOOK APP. AT ALL. I HAVE IMPORTANT THINGS THAT I USE MY CURRANT EMAIL FOR AND THIS CHANGE IS GOING TO BE MORE THAN INCONVIENT. WHY ARE WE BEING FORCED INTO SOMETHING THAT WE DONT WANT. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO AVOID THIS? CAN I GO WITH FOXFIRE OR GMAIL OR SOMETHING ELSE OR AM I GOING TO HAVE TO BUY A MAC?
Kathy says
Have uninstalled the new Outlook app on Windows 10 but am unable to reinstall the Mail app.
I notice that previous comments that are not favourable are being deleted. What a shame!
Very Disappointed says
There is so much wrong with the New Outlook, compared to the Windows Mail app. That is apart from the confusion caused calling every email app “outlook”, even though each app is quite different from each other. I will not go into details – it would be far too long a post.
I will do what I should have done a long time ago and access all my emails and email accounts via Gmail.
At least, so far, Google doesn’t “fix”???? what ain’t broke.
admin says
You can consider completely uninstalling the new Outlook app from your Windows 10/11 installation if you are not happy with it. Please follow this guide for directions:

Peter Larsen says
I know after 2 seconds that I want to revert to windows mail. Why do I have to wait “some time”. I want the access to accounts that worked re-working. I don’t want to have no friggin fuzz with reenablling everything so that you can display ads in an ad capable client. I WANT A ROLLBACK NOW!!!!!!!
k kilburn says
Get rid of this rubbish and use the brilliant Firefox THUNDERBIRD mail app
John says
New outlook don’t work on my laptop and I want to get BACK TO OLD OUTLOOK BUT Cant because there is no button!!!
How?!!!!!!
Amonymous says
No button to use to switch back. Really pissed off that I now have to deal with adds! This is not what I signed up for!
sharon Pidsosnyy says
I am sick and tired of Microsoft and am going to get an Apple. All my students at university have Apple as do my family. The new Outlook email system sucks and I do not want it. Why do you keep interfering with what I want. I am the customer, am I not??????Leave me with my old Outlook email, thank you
Matt says
The toggle is gone and I can’t revert back to the old outlook. :(
The new outlook does not support recalling a sent message.
There is an “undo” button but you can only set it to a maximum of 10 seconds.
Steve says
They dont call EVERY mail client Outlook, hence the built in Mail app in Windows 10 and 11.
I think the bigger question is why they feel the need to deploy a “try this” app to business users, who, will click on literally everything (even blatant phishing and malware emails0 and then open tickets to fix things, or worse, do a dry by and say “I dont know what happened but I clicked on…….)
Not All Mail Is Outlook says
Why do Microsoft feel it is necessary to call every mail client Outlook. If the new Outlook App is different from the Outlook Desktop App then don’t give it the same name.
Have they learned nothing from the debacle that is the “Personal” vs “Work or School” versions of OneDrive and Teams? Users don’t know the difference if they all have the same name.
They can’t sign into the personal version with a business account and they can’t sign into the business version with a personal account. As far as the end user is concerned, which ever type of email address they have, they have a mailbox that is hosted by Microsoft.
