Microsoft Outlook is the most popular desktop email client out there. Available for both Windows and Mac, it supports all leading webmail services, including Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud, and Yahoo! Mail.
The Microsoft Outlook client for Mac is probably better than Outlook for Windows. PC users who have used Outlook on a Mac will agree that it looks and feels better on Mac.
Outlook for Mac does miss out on some of the advanced features (which most users never need) present in Outlook for Windows. However, Outlook for Mac is easier to use.
Until now, Microsoft Outlook for Mac required a license. Users had to subscribe to Microsoft 365 or buy Office 2021/2019 license to use the Outlook desktop client.
The good news is that Microsoft Outlook for Mac has been made free. Yes, Outlook for Mac is now free! Mac users who do not have a Microsoft 365 subscription or Office 2021/2019 license can also install and use Outlook for Mac.
If you are unsure, here is how to download and install Outlook for Mac for free.
Step 1: Open the App Store on your Mac.
Step 2: Search for Microsoft Outlook and install it.
Is Microsoft Outlook free on Windows 10/11 as well?
Unfortunately, Microsoft Outlook for Windows continues to be a paid software. We are unsure why Outlook has been made free only for Mac, but Outlook for Windows is not free yet.
That said, Microsoft is rolling out a PWA version of Outlook for Windows to replace the inbox Mail app. We expect it to be free, but it’s not a full pledged desktop client like Outlook for Windows.
Is Microsoft Office 365 also free on Mac?
No, only the Outlook desktop client has been made free. Other Office applications such as Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint remain paid.
