Edge is a new web browser from Microsoft. Microsoft Edge is preinstalled in Windows 10, and it is the default web browser in Windows 10.
While Internet Explorer continues to be part of Windows 10, the classic desktop browser from Microsoft is no longer receives feature updates, meaning Internet Explore will not receive any new features.
Microsoft Edge is being updated regularly to add new features and options. It now supports extensions, allows you to make web notes, comes with a built-in password manager, offers great protection against threats, and has almost all the features that you see in other popular web browsers.
We have been asked literally multiple times if it’s possible to download and install Edge in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Even PC users who are on Windows 10 want to download a fresh copy of Edge so that they can reinstall Edge.
Is it possible to download Edge on Windows 10?
Edge is preinstalled in Windows 10 and cannot be downloaded separately. Because Microsoft is not offering Edge as a separate download, there is no way to download Edge even on Windows 10 leave alone Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
If you are on Windows 10 and looking to reinstall Edge browser by downloading a fresh copy of Edge browser, you will be glad to know that you can fix Edge browser issues by resetting the Edge browser. The other way is to Reset Windows 10 PC or completely reinstall Windows 10.
Can I download Edge for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?
UPDATE on March 25, 2019: Microsoft is currently building a new Edge browser based on Chromium and it will be available for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 as well. We will update the article with all the information once the new Edge is released.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to download and install the current version of Edge browser on a PC running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
As said before, Edge browser is not available for download as it’s offered as built-in software in Windows 10. More than that, Edge is built on the new Universal App platform introduced first in Windows 10.
So, if you want to download and install Edge on Windows 7 or 8.1, you have no option but to upgrade Windows 7/8.1 install to Windows 10 using the official Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
That said, if you want to try out Edge on your Windows 7/8 PC, you may install a trial or licensed version of Windows 10 or Edge virtual machine on Windows 7/8.1 PC using virtualization software such as the VirtualBox.

Part of Edge problem was it never could run on half of Windows PC’s running Windows 7. A huge mistake if you ask me if you want upgraders from Win 7 to Win 10 to embrace a new browser like Edge. Ironically Microsoft has finally decided to ditch the ideal and adopt Chromium engine which will give the browser ability to run on Win 7 and Mac OS as well as potentially other platforms like Linux. Clearly a admission that a browser to succeed you have to run on as many platforms as possible. Something Microsoft should had realized with enterprise customers who use many different devices on many operating systems.

Microsoft are a bunch of dicks! Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 due to the old processor I have and this means I cannot use Edge.
A bit stupid – create a browser that is much better than IE. Slap it with an unfortunate logo that resembles IE, limit it to a specific OS….no wonder the likes of Firefox, Chrome, Opera which do not impose limitations are killing IE and Edge in terms of sheer usage.
